ABOUT OUR SCHOOL
The Holy Family of Nazareth Sisters administered the parish school from 1959 until
they relinquished the administration of the school in June 1990.
In 1991, Monsignor Noel Fogarty was assigned as pastor of St. Gregory the Great
Parish. Under Monsignor’s guidance, the Kindergarten was moved to the former convent
building and the old kindergarten was turned into an art room. Work was begun for
a new self-study for re-accreditation.
In July 1992, Monsignor Noel Fogarty began the Office for Institutional Advancement
(Development). During 1992-1993, this office directed "The Building Together
in Faith" Capital Campaign for the construction and renovation of the entire
parish facilities. On February 5, 1995, ground was broken for the construction of
new school facilities and a parish gymnatorium, which were completed in August 1995.
The new school accommodates the growing population and provides state-of-the-art
facilities for the technology, library, and science curricula. Accommodations for
a third section of each grade level were made. Beginning in the fall of 1996, St.
Gregory welcomed 50 Pre-Kindergarten students to meet the ever-growing demand for
early childhood education.
St. Gregory the Great School consists of 30 classrooms, a remedial center, a computer
lab, a media center, an art studio, science lab and gymnatorium. Our fully equipped
cafeteria is open Monday through Friday. The school also features an athletic field
for intramural and league sports. There is a complete Extended Day Care program
until 6:00 p.m. A fun-filled camp is also offered in the summer for students of
St. Gregory the Great School only. Dedication of St. Gregory the Great School was
held January 14, 1996, by the Most Reverend John Clement Favalora, Archbishop of
Miami.
In 1998, our music studio was completely renovated and in the summer of 2000 construction
was completed for the expansion of faculty dining area, the new conference room,
a counselor’s office and a school bookstore. The computer lab once again enhances
technology by installing all Pentium computers with Microsoft software, the Encarta
series. During the summer of 2002, the entire play area for students was transformed
into a beautiful new park-like setting, with various activities for the different
grade levels. Also, the magnificent prayer garden was completed.
In 2003, the school began a school instrumental music program. This band is open
to all students, grades 3-8.
In 2004, interactive white boards, a means of enhancing classroom instruction, were
installed in select classes. This is a continuing project for 2005 and, hopefully,
by 2006 the school will be complete with all the technological improvements. During
this time, a multi-media system was installed enabling students to announce prayers
and school information to each class.
In 2005, plans were drawn to begin the renovation of our parish church. The "Worshiping
Together in Faith" campaign will begin in November, 2005. Renovations will
begin in January 2006.
Parents of students are encouraged to participate fully in the spiritual life of
the parish, which includes family participation at mass weekly, educational, and
various other activities of the parish.
We believe that our school is a great gift to our church and our community. In collaboration
with our colleagues here and in Catholic school throughout the country, we commit
ourselves to meet the challenges of the future as an American Catholic School for
the 21st Century.
