Introduction:
Baptism is one of the Seven Sacraments of the Catholic Church. The Rite of Baptism is rich in meaning and uses prayer, rituals and symbols that date back to the beginning of the Church over 2000 years ago, from anointing the child with the oil of chrism to invoking the saints. One particular aspect of the baptism ceremony is the baptismal garment or white robe often worn by those who are baptized.

What is the baptismal garment?
In baptism, the symbolism used may not just have one meaning but several. Our belief is that through baptism, we take off the old life of sin and put on a new life in Christ, symbolized by putting on a white garment. The “Catechism of the Catholic Church” teaches: The white garment symbolizes that the person baptized has ‘put on Christ,’ has risen with Christ.”

The white garment also symbolizes the Church’s belief that baptism sets us free from original sin. “By baptism, all sins are forgiven, original sin and all personal sins, as well as all punishment for sin,” says the Catechism. “In those who have been reborn i.e. baptized, nothing remains that would impede their entry into the Kingdom of God, neither Adam’s sin, nor personal sin, nor the consequences of sin, the gravest of which is separation from God.”

At St. Gregory’s all children during the celebration of the Sacrament of Baptism are presented with a baptismal garment they are allowed to keep. These baptismal garments are individually hand sown and hand embroidered by members of this ministry.
